Mobile telephone operator MTN and telecom equipment provider Ericsson have signed a partnership agreement with the end goal of providing a better management of IT waste in Côte d’Ivoire. Through a campaign to collect unused/obsolete computers, mobile telephones, routers, printers, televisions, radios and various other IT and electronic equipment, the two companies want to reduce the environmental impact associated with this used equipment. The collection campaign will start on 7th October 2015 in Abidjan.
Freddy Tchala, CEO of MTN Côte d’Ivoire, explained that “the electronic waste collection campaign initiated as part of our CSR policy is special, as it will enable us to raise awareness on the harmful effects of electric and electronic waste on the environment and quality of life. Collection desks will be opened to safely receive disused electric and electronic equipment which will be dispatched outside Côte d’Ivoire to be recycled by a specialised company”.
The Abidjan IT and electronic waste collection campaign is part of the environmental management program of Ericsson which goal is to ensure a healthy future in markets where the Swedish group operates. It is similar to the campaign launched with MTN Benin in January 2015.
