Gabon Telecom and Airtel required to improve service quality

Wednesday, 31 October 2018 18:02

On October 29, 2018, Gabon’s telecommunications regulator sent a formal notice to Gabon Telecom and Airtel Gabon for non-compliance with the quality regulations. In the notice, they were required to improve the quality of their services as soon as possible.

For Lin Mombo (photo), president of the regulatory agency, if the two operators do not improve their service quality, despite the formal notice, they will incur the sanctions provided by the law 005/2001 of June 27, 2001, on the regulation of the telecommunications sector in Gabon.

Article 31 of this law stipulates that in case the formal notice does not spur actions, the culprit can be fined or its license could be suspended, the duration reduced or this license could simply be withdrawn.

The formal notice sent to Gabon Telecom and Airtel Gabon is the result of a national campaign to assess the quality of mobile telecommunication networks conducted by the regulatory agency from August 20 to September 18, 2018. This campaign revealed numerous discrepancies on the quality and on the 2G, 3G and 4G network coverage.
