In Nigeria, towards establishing a fully organized and well-equipped learning environment to improving the skill and method of truck driving, as well as guarantying safe driving behaviors in the country, Total has installed two high-tech driving simulators at its Truck Drivers Training School and Inspection Centre in Ibadan and in its Head office in Lagos. This move is part of the company’s effort in improving road safety and creating safe driving practices and culture amongst truck drivers in the country. The two simulators are to be used as active training tools to prepare drivers for the management of unpredictable hazards, such as crashes. Recent analysis have revealed that crashes are considerably higher amidst drivers with no experience during their first year of licencing. On that note, Total Nigeria has said training such drivers using these simulators will reduces the risk of crash. Total’s Truck Drivers Training School and Inspection Centre was established in Ibadan, Oyo state on March 28, 2011.
According to Total Nigeria Plc.’s General Manager for Health Safety Environment & Quality, Mr. Rabiu Abdulmutalib, this and related initiatives have created to better products transportation, increase safety, commit to a better future and better energy efficiency. “With continued success, the Total Truck Drivers Training School and Inspection Centre is well on its way to improving road transportation safety as well as the transportation and distribution of petroleum products throughout Nigeria. More importantly, since its establishment truck accident rate and accident fatality have reduced by over 60 per cent and 95 per cent respectively. This is an indication of our commitment to improved transportation safety and a better energy future”, he told THIS DAY.
