Towards addressing the growing energy demands in the country, the Republic of Mozambique’s Pipeline Investments Company (Rompco), has today revealed plans to expand the 865km gas pipeline which conveys gas from Mozambique to South Africa.
This expansion plan requires the installation of a pipeline similar to the previous one from scraper station 1 (STS1). The pipeline is about 128km from the Central Processing Facility (CPF) at Temane in Mozambique, over a distance of 127km where it will connect back into the main pipeline at scraper station 2.
According to Sasol, one of the JV partners in Rompco, the $210 million expansion project scheduled to begin operation in early 2017, is aimed at boosting Rompco's gas transmission capacity. It will convey gas to South Africa and also be able to serve other markets in Mozambique and South Africa, as gas becomes available.
As a matter of fact, Rompco is the owner of the pipeline with which gas bought from Mozambique is conveyed to South Africa and to Ressano Garcia in Mozambique. The project is to create job opportunities for about 700 citizens from communities close to the location of the project for the period of construction.
“As we continue to invest in Mozambique, this project further deepens our commitment to skills development, while creating employment opportunities through our activities”; Louis Bosch, Rompco’s General Manager told News24wire.
The Republic of Mozambique’s Pipeline Investments Company (Rompco) is a cooperative partnership between Sasol, Companhia Mocambiçana de Gasoduto and South African Gas Development Company (iGas).
