Ghana’s Ministry of Communications and Digitalization announced on Wednesday, April 15, plans to strengthen cooperation with Italy on cybersecurity. Both countries aim to bolster the resilience of their digital ecosystems and the security of critical infrastructure.
"Cybersecurity is a shared responsibility. Ghana and Italy are joining forces to build a secure and resilient digital future," said Samuel Nartey George, Ghana’s Minister of Communications and Digitalization.
The initiative is part of Ghana’s strategy to support the growth of its digital economy. As digital services expand, particularly in telecommunications, finance and public administration, the risk of cyberattacks is rising, underscoring the need for stronger safeguards.
Beyond technical aspects, the move reflects growing recognition that cybersecurity is a strategic priority for governments. According to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Ghana ranks among the global leaders in cybersecurity. In its Global Cybersecurity Index 2024, the country scored 99.27 out of 100, while Italy achieved a perfect score.
However, Ghana still suffers losses from cybercrime. Between 2019 and 2025, the country lost more than $3 billion, including 19 million cedis (about $1.7 million) in the first nine months of 2025. This marks a 17% increase compared with the same period in 2024, according to the Cybersecurity Authority. The country also recorded 2,008 incidents in the first half of 2025, 17% higher than the total recorded in 2024.
