Algeria is stepping up efforts to develop domestic expertise in emerging technologies. Minister of Vocational Training Nacima Arhab and Minister of Knowledge Economy, Startups and Micro-Enterprises Noureddine Ouadah on Sunday launched a national artificial intelligence training program at the El Rahmania National Specialized Vocational Training Institute in Algiers.
Authorities say the initiative aims to position local skills as a key driver of technological adaptation and support the growth of the knowledge economy. The program seeks to train candidates who can quickly enter the digital workforce and develop solutions tailored to business and market needs.
The program follows a hands-on model. The 12-week cycle includes eight weeks of intensive training followed by four weeks of real-world project work. A train-the-trainers program launched on Jan. 15, 2026, was introduced to ensure teaching quality.
The approach is designed to align training with real-world conditions and speed up participants’ transition into the workforce. Trainees work on real cases, including with startups, using the latest artificial intelligence tools and models.
A National Strategy to Accelerate Digital Skills
The initiative forms part of a broader digital transformation strategy that authorities plan to introduce soon. The plan aims to train up to 500,000 information and communications technology specialists and curb the outflow of skilled workers.
Algeria also aims to strengthen its technological sovereignty and increase its share of value generated by artificial intelligence. Authorities are targeting AI to contribute nearly 7% of gross domestic product by 2027. To support this goal, measures include dedicated funding, the development of centers of excellence and expanded access to digital technologies.
Beyond training, the program is part of a wider effort to build an innovation ecosystem. A business incubator has been opened at the institute to support entrepreneurs and encourage the creation of technology startups.
