Mauritanian authorities announced on December 26 the launch of an artificial intelligence-based solution dedicated to road safety.
Developed by the State Digital Agency under the supervision of the Ministry of Digital Transformation and Administrative Modernization, the technology is now operational across the country’s entire road network.
The system relies on artificial intelligence, computer vision, and image processing technologies to automatically detect and record traffic violations in real time. Smart cameras identify cases of vehicle overloading and check compliance with safety rules, particularly on intercity routes.
In its initial phase, the solution focuses on two violations with a direct impact on road user safety: vehicle overloading, through automated detection of excess weight, and failure to wear seat belts, the ministry said.
The initiative forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen road safety amid persistently high accident rates linked to violations of traffic regulations. The project was developed with the involvement of engineers from the General Directorate of National Security, which is now responsible for the system’s operational management.
By generating automatic alerts and ensuring structured data traceability, the solution aims to improve the effectiveness of enforcement mechanisms, reduce reliance on manual inspections, and lower the number of road accidents.
