Cape Verde has launched the process to develop a national data strategy for public administration, alongside a dedicated strategy on artificial intelligence, with the goal of improving the efficiency of government operations.
The initiative was announced on April 28 during a meeting led by Digital Economy Minister Olavo Correia, attended by government officials, consultants, and international partners, including the European Union.
According to the ministry, the government aims to shift from siloed systems to a more integrated approach, strengthening how the state collects, organizes, and uses data while creating the conditions for responsible and effective use of artificial intelligence in the public interest.
In practical terms, authorities plan to move away from fragmented information management toward a more coordinated system. This involves improving the structuring, sharing, and use of public data to support decision-making and enhance service delivery to citizens. The reform is also seen as a key step toward integrating AI into administrative processes.
The initiative reflects a broader trend across Africa, where several countries, including Ghana, Mauritius, Djibouti, and Benin, are investing in data-driven technologies to improve governance.
For Cape Verde, the objective is to strengthen administrative efficiency while improving the relationship between the state and citizens. However, no timeline has yet been provided for the rollout of the strategies.
