Canyon CEO Peter Secker resigns; global search for successor launched
Secker stays during transition as Minim Martap nears 2026 production
New CEO to oversee output ramp-up and refinery feasibility study
Canyon Resources said on Monday that Chief Executive Peter Secker had resigned, adding that the Australian company had launched a global search for his successor.
Secker will remain in his role in the coming months to oversee the transition as the Minim Martap bauxite project in Cameroon moves toward commissioning, the company said.
His departure, attributed to personal reasons, comes weeks before first production at the site, expected in the second quarter of 2026. He will continue to supervise construction of what is set to become Cameroon’s first bauxite mine, a project he has helped accelerate since taking office in July 2025.
Depending on how long the transition lasts, his successor will be tasked with bringing the project to full production while finalising talks with prospective buyers. The incoming chief executive will also oversee a feasibility study for an alumina refinery that was 45% complete as of January 2026.
“We fully understand and respect Peter’s decision and have launched a global search for a senior executive with specific experience in bauxite and alumina operations,” Non-Executive Chairman Mark Hohnen said.
Minim Martap holds more than 1.1 billion tonnes of bauxite, including ore reserves of 144 million tonnes grading 51.2% alumina and 1.7% silica. First shipments are scheduled for the third quarter of 2026.
