  • South Africa’s 120 MW Doornhoek solar plant begins full operations
  • Facility to generate 325 GWh yearly, powering about 97,000 homes
  • Project supports renewable expansion under REIPPPP program

The Doornhoek solar plant in South Africa’s North West province has been commissioned and is now supplying its full capacity to the national grid.

The 120 MW facility, developed by AMEA Power near Klerksdorp, is fully connected, Sineng Electric, the project’s inverter supplier, said in an April 16 statement.

Engineering, procurement and construction were carried out by Sterling & Wilson Renewable Energy, it added.

Awarded under the sixth bidding window of South Africa’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP), the project spans about 200 hectares. Sineng Electric supplied and commissioned 19 central inverters for the facility.

Once fully operational, the Doornhoek plant is expected to generate more than 325 GWh of clean electricity per year, enough to power around 97,000 homes and avoid about 330,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions, the company said.

The project is part of AMEA Power’s broader expansion across the continent. According to its Sustainability Report 2024, published in October 2025, 77.5% of the company’s global portfolio—equivalent to 4.14 GW—is located in Africa.

In April 2026, MIGA also signed a master agreement with the Dubai-based group to support up to 23 renewable energy projects, mobilising more than $1.65 billion in investments, including several in Africa.

The Doornhoek project highlights AMEA Power’s growing presence in South Africa, where independent producers remain central to expanding renewable energy capacity.
