Global South Utilities commissioned a 5 MWp grid-connected solar plant in Berbera under the “Green Berbera Vision” program.
The plant will generate about 10,000 MWh annually and avoid roughly 6,890 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year.
GSU is expanding its African footprint with projects in Chad, the Central African Republic and Madagascar.
UAE-based Global South Utilities (GSU) announced on February 17, that it inaugurated a grid-connected solar power plant in Berbera, marking a new step in the diversification of the port city’s electricity system in Somaliland.
The facility has a capacity of 5 megawatt-peak (MWp). The project forms part of the “Green Berbera Vision,” a program that aims to reduce diesel dependence and increase renewable generation supported by battery storage systems. The project also includes 11.2 kilometers of 33 kV transmission lines and associated substations.
GSU estimates that the plant will generate around 10,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity per year. The company says the output will match the consumption of nearly 28,000 households. The plant should also prevent approximately 6,890 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually.
The commissioning comes as GSU expands its presence in Africa, particularly in markets where electricity access remains limited even in urban areas. In early February 2026, the company announced the start of construction of a 5 MWp hybrid solar plant in Amdjarass, eastern Chad. The project integrates 5 MWh of battery storage and a 5 MVA diesel generator, and the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development finances the project through a grant.
In September 2025, GSU inaugurated the 50 MW Noor Chad solar plant in Djarmaya. The company has also announced projects in the Central African Republic and Madagascar, including a 50 MW plant with 25 MWh of storage in Moramanga.
