On January 20, Ignite Energy Access, a company specializing in solar solutions across Africa, announced the commissioning of 15 solar mini-grids in the Chadiza district in eastern Zambia. The company’s chief executive officer disclosed the information and said the installations represent the second batch of projects delivered under the Increased Access to Electricity and Renewable Energy Production program.
These new installations form part of a portfolio of 60 solar mini-grids that Ignite Energy Access continues to develop in eastern Zambia. The company said the commissioned sites will provide clean and reliable electricity to households, schools, health centers, and small businesses.
The European Union cofinanced the IAEREP program through the National Authorising Office. Zambian authorities, including the Rural Electrification Authority and the Ministry of Energy, also supported the program’s implementation alongside local authorities.
This announcement comes as Ignite Energy Access continues to expand its footprint across Africa. In October 2025, the group completed the acquisition of Engie Energy Access, the off-grid arm of France’s Engie. Following the transaction, Ignite Energy Access became Africa’s largest off-grid electrification company, serving about 15 million users across 12 countries.
In Zambia, decentralized energy solutions play an increasing role in the national electrification strategy due to their relevance. The World Bank estimated that mini-grids and solar home systems could supply electricity to 8.5 million people by 2030. This figure represents nearly half of the population that currently lacks access to electricity.
