Zambia has commissioned a new 50 MW solar power plant in the Luapula province, as part of efforts to expand electricity access and reduce reliance on hydropower.
President Hakainde Hichilema inaugurated the facility in the Mansa district, according to a statement from the Ministry of Energy.
The project was developed by the state-owned utility Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO) at a cost of about $48 million. Construction began in February 2025 and was completed in December of the same year.
A push to strengthen the energy mix
Authorities say the plant will improve the reliability of electricity supply in the region and support local economic activities, including manganese mining. The project also created more than 350 jobs during construction, with priority given to local communities.
President Hichilema said the project reflects a structured approach to development based on clear planning and execution. He noted that it marks the first major power generation investment in the province in more than 60 years.
Zambia’s electricity system still relies heavily on hydropower, which accounts for about 85% of the energy mix, according to the Ministry of Energy. A drop in output during the 2024 drought exposed the vulnerability of that model.
In response, the government has accelerated solar development to diversify the energy mix and improve energy security.
Several projects have been announced in recent weeks, including a 250 MWp solar plant with storage in Lusaka led by Globeleq, and a 118 MWp facility developed by Goldenray Energy. The commissioning of the Mansa plant fits into this broader effort to expand solar infrastructure, particularly in underserved regions.
