  • Ghana is receiving 100 buses assembled in Egypt to support public transport
  • The delivery is part of a plan to acquire more than 300 buses in 2026
  • The move aims to rebuild a shrinking fleet and ease pressure from private operators

A shipment of 100 buses assembled in Egypt is on its way to Ghana as authorities move to strengthen the country’s public transport system.

The delivery, confirmed in a March 17 statement from the Egyptian government, follows an announcement made in late February by Ghana’s transport minister, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, regarding plans to expand the fleet of the state-owned Metro Mass Transit company.

The buses are part of a broader program to acquire more than 300 units by the end of the year. The initiative is intended to support an operator facing persistent challenges, including a shrinking fleet, maintenance constraints, and shortages of spare parts.

According to figures cited by local media and attributed to Ghana’s vice presidency, the company’s operational fleet has declined from around 1,000 buses to about 400 in recent years.

The contraction has opened space for private operators, including “trotro” minibuses, conventional taxis, and ride-hailing platforms such as Bolt, Yango, and Uber.

Egyptian authorities said the buses are being transported aboard the vessel SUNSHINE ACE, which made a stop at the Turkish port of Lehman before heading to the port of Tema.
