824 applications received for 182 bursary slots in 2026, up 7.85% from 2025
Only about 22% of applicants selected, indicating strong competition
Programme targets marginalized youth aged 17–25, including refugees and persons with disabilities
Zambia’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) bursary programme has recorded rising demand in recent intakes. For the 2026 Cohort 3 intake, the Forum for African Women Educationalists of Zambia (FAWEZA) received 824 applications, up from 764 in 2025, marking a 7.85% increase. Of these applicants, 569 were female (69%) and 255 were male (31%), while 53 were refugees and 30 were Persons with Disabilities. A total of 182 candidates were selected, representing about 22% of applicants.
The bursary, supported by the Mastercard Foundation through FAWE Africa, is part of the Second Chance Pathways for Increased Access to Tertiary Education for Marginalized Young Women and Men programme. It targets young people aged 17–25 who have completed secondary education but require additional academic support to transition into tertiary education, particularly in STEM fields. The programme focuses on skills development, access to higher education, and employment prospects for marginalized youth.
The increase in applications comes amid persistently high youth unemployment and underemployment in Zambia, particularly among secondary school graduates without tertiary or technical qualifications. According to the latest Zambian Labor Force Survey, youth unemployment is estimated at 15-20%. In this context, demand for technical and vocational training reflects the role of such programmes in providing alternative pathways to further education and skills acquisition.
FAWEZA stated that the selection process involved District, Provincial, and National Selection Committees, with participation from partners including FAWEZA Alumni, ZAPD, UNHCR, CAMFED, and government ministries. The gap between the number of applicants and selected beneficiaries highlights the level of competition for available bursary opportunities.
