U.S. and Togo discuss expanding cooperation on security and migration
Washington continues support for stability efforts in northern Togo
Partnership also spans health, education, and economic development
Togo and the United States are looking to strengthen their longstanding partnership, with a renewed focus on security, migration, and development cooperation.
On March 13 in Lomé, President of the Council Faure Gnassingbé met with Christian Jové Ehrhardt, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State at the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration. The visit was part of ongoing bilateral dialogue between the two countries on migration, security, and development issues.
The discussions centered on ways to deepen cooperation. Ehrhardt said the United States and Togo share a strong relationship dating back to the country’s independence, and that both sides are exploring how to build on that foundation. He also described the visit as his first to Togo and praised the country.
The United States remains one of Togo’s longstanding partners, with active programs in security, governance, and social development.
Security cooperation has intensified in recent years as the region faces growing threats from violent extremism. Washington supports Togo’s Emergency Program for the Savanes Region (PURS), which aims to stabilize the country’s north and strengthen the resilience of communities exposed to security risks. The program also benefits from broader international backing, including U.S. support through coastal stability initiatives.
The partnership includes a military component. U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) works with Togolese forces to improve training, operational coordination, and preparedness against transnational threats.
Beyond security, the United States supports projects in health, education, and governance. Both countries are also seeking to expand trade and investment, as geopolitical dynamics continue to evolve across West Africa.
