Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, who came to power in October following a wave of protests, dismissed his first government on March 9 before appointing Mamitiana Rajaonarison as prime minister on March 15.
Madagascar’s interim president, Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, unveiled a new cabinet on Wednesday, March 25, days after dissolving his first government. The new executive team, led by Prime Minister Mamitiana Rajaonarison, includes 30 members, nine of them women.
The reshuffle largely preserves continuity. Seventeen ministers kept their posts, including Fanirisoa Ernaivo at Justice, Herinjatovo Ramiarison at Economy and Finance, and Hanitriniaina Razafimanantsoa, who remains in charge of institutional reform — a key portfolio ahead of planned national consultations.
Two notable changes stand out. At Foreign Affairs, Christine Razanamahasoa was replaced by career diplomat Alice N'Diaye. The strategic Energy portfolio was assigned to Lucas Rabearimanga, a former official at the Malagasy Office of Hydrocarbons.
The new government is tasked with overseeing a political process that includes nationwide consultations, drafting a new constitution and organising a presidential election scheduled for late 2027.
The cabinet’s formation follows the appointment of Mamitiana Rajaonarison as prime minister on March 15, 2026.
On the economic front, S&P Global Ratings put Madagascar’s sovereign rating of B-/B on negative watch, citing risks from political instability to growth and fiscal discipline. Growth forecasts for 2025–2026 were revised down to 3% from a previous estimate of 4.1%.
