• Gharib, ex-industry minister, now leads new government
• Tasked with sustaining 4.5% growth, diversifying economy beyond oil

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has dismissed Prime Minister Nadir Larbaoui and appointed Sifi Gharib as his successor. The decision, announced on Thursday, August 28, 2025, by the presidency, was not accompanied by any official explanation.

Larbaoui had held the position since November 2023 and was reappointed in November 2024 after President Tebboune’s reelection. Before this appointment, Sifi Gharib served as Minister of Industry, a role he took on when the cabinet was reappointed in 2024. He previously led the Algerian Industrial University Group.

Gharib will face several challenges as he takes the helm of the government. He is tasked with sustaining the economic momentum of recent years. While Algeria's economy remains heavily dependent on hydrocarbons, efforts have been underway to diversify and reduce that reliance. For 2025, the government is betting on the industrial, agricultural, and construction, public works, and hydraulics sectors to support an estimated 4.5% economic growth.
