China Grants Seychelles $14.5M as Housing Projects and Trade Talks Advance

  • China grants $14.46 million to Seychelles for development projects
  • Talks advance cooperation across health, infrastructure, trade, and security
  • Housing project launched amid deepening strategic China–Seychelles partnership

China has reaffirmed its commitment to Seychelles with a 100-million-yuan grant, equivalent to about $14.46 million, for key development projects, the government said in a statement Sunday.

The pledge was announced during a visit by Chinese Vice President Han Zheng. Talks focused on progress in cooperation projects in health, education, infrastructure, maritime security and housing.

The grant comes as Seychelles seeks to benefit from China’s zero-tariff policy for African nations. “Both sides welcomed progress towards the Early Harvest Arrangement, expected to take effect on 1 May 2026, which will further enhance trade opportunities,” the statement said. The arrangement is designed to provide early duty-free access to certain goods ahead of a broader trade agreement.

Seychelles and China are marking 50 years of diplomatic relations, a partnership marked by numerous official visits and agreements covering investment, visa exemptions and a political consultation mechanism.

In 2024, the two countries elevated ties to a strategic partnership, underscoring their commitment to deeper long-term cooperation. That same year, bilateral trade reached $84 million, including machinery, electrical goods, agricultural products and seafood.

On the sidelines of the visit, a 72-unit housing project was launched Saturday in Béolière, Seychelles.

The Beolière project forms part of a broader Seychelles–China cooperation framework that will deliver a total of 141 units, including an additional 69 units at Cap Bonm Zan in Anse Royale,” the government said.

The project includes infrastructure such as sanitation systems, green spaces and recreational areas, aimed at providing sustainable, community-focused living environments.
