Zambia’s e-governance agency, the Smart Zambia Institute, has signed an agreement with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to provide internet access to 751 health facilities across the country.
The initiative is part of the Smart Health Systems (SHS) project to modernize the digital infrastructure of Zambia’s healthcare system. It aims to equip health facilities, including those in rural areas, with stable and secure internet connectivity. This will enable data exchange, telemedicine, electronic medical records, and better coordination of public health services.
The Smart Zambia Institute will oversee the project’s technical implementation, while the UNDP will provide financial and logistical support.
The initiative aims to strengthen the resilience of the health system and accelerate the digital transformation of the public sector. It is also expected to improve health data collection, which is vital for epidemic management and policymaking. In the medium term, connecting the 751 health centers is part of the broader Smart Zambia strategy, which seeks to harness digital technology to promote inclusive development.
