The Lagos State government announced plans earlier this week to launch a digital platform, the Telecommunication Infrastructure Regulatory System (TIRS). Set to go live in February 2026, the system will automate the permit process for telecom towers, masts, and fiber-optic networks.
Developed by the Lagos State Infrastructure Maintenance and Regulatory Agency (LASIMRA), the platform will allow telecom operators and infrastructure firms to apply for licenses online, eliminating most manual paperwork.
“The implementation of the Telecommunication Infrastructure Regulatory System (TIRS) is expected to significantly enhance transparency and accountability, minimizing human interaction by 99 per cent,” said Prince Oyekanmi Elegushi, General Manager of LASIMRA, as reported by Nairametrics.
The reform is part of Lagos State’s broader digital governance drive to improve transparency and attract investment in the telecommunications sector. Nigeria’s main economic hub, Lagos hosts much of the nation’s critical telecom infrastructure, particularly mobile and fiber networks.
The new system will also strengthen oversight and ensure better compliance for infrastructure installations. In recent years, LASIMRA has conducted multiple operations to dismantle towers installed illegally or found to violate safety standards. Automating permit tracking is expected to improve monitoring and enable real-time oversight.
