Namibian telecom operator MTC Namibia and Botswana’s fibre infrastructure operator Botswana Fibre Networks (BoFiNet) recently signed a memorandum of understanding to develop cross-border fibre-optic connectivity between the two countries. The agreement provides for deeper interconnection of their respective networks, capacity exchange, and collaboration on IP transit services.
At the center of the initiative stands the strategic Buitepos–Ngoma corridor, which serves as a key junction point between the two territories. The partners aim to improve network redundancy, optimize internet traffic flows, and strengthen infrastructure resilience.
“The Buitepos-Ngoma corridor is not merely a physical interconnection point. It represents a key pillar of our international expansion strategy, providing an operational gateway into Botswana’s global ecosystem while strengthening Namibia’s position as a transit market and digital gateway,” said Licky Erastus, Chief Executive Officer of MTC.

The initiative forms part of a broader push toward digital integration in Southern Africa. As data demand accelerates, driven by cloud services, streaming platforms, digital financial services, and e-commerce, regional governments seek to secure national backbone networks and multiply alternative routes to reduce outage risks and dependence on international circuits.
By strengthening cross-border interconnections, Namibia and Botswana consolidate their positions within the regional digital ecosystem. Improved connectivity can lower transit costs, enhance service quality for businesses, and support economic attractiveness.
