Germany announced on Wednesday new financial commitments worth 50.3 million euros (about 58 million dollars) for Togo. The announcement followed intergovernmental talks held in Berlin on November 11 and 12, according to a joint statement from both countries.
The Togolese delegation was led by Bèguèdouwè Paneto, Secretary General of the Ministry in charge of Planning, while the German side was headed by Dr. Bärbel Kofler, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
Under the agreement, 17.5 million euros will go to technical cooperation and 32.8 million euros to financial cooperation. The funds will focus on agriculture and food systems development, local governance, and programs in health, social protection and demographic policy.
With this new package, Germany’s cooperation portfolio with Togo now totals 567.46 million euros, confirming Berlin as the country’s largest bilateral donor, the statement said.
The two delegations also reviewed project administration, the upkeep of German-funded infrastructure and long-term cooperation prospects. They reaffirmed that Germany’s support will continue to align with the priorities set out in Togo’s Government Roadmap 2030.
German assistance forms part of the Team Europe Joint Programming 2021–2027 strategy, which includes projects co-financed with the European Union, France and Luxembourg. The discussions also touched on the G20’s Compact with Africa initiative, backed by Berlin, which launched a multi-donor trust fund in October to promote reforms and stimulate private investment in partner countries, including Togo. The next round of intergovernmental talks between the two countries is scheduled for 2028 in Lomé.
