The acquisition of South African data centre services provider Teraco Data by Boston-based Berkshire Partners could be one of the most important, in terms of value, in the Sub Saharan private equity sector if it is finalized.
The value of this operation has not been disclosed but, when Permiram, the transferor, announced that it was seeking an acquirer for the firm, Teraco was valued between $600 million and $1 billion (debt included) by experts cited by Bloomberg.
In addition, Berkshire has committed its Berkshire Fund IX that closed at $5.5 billion and invested between $50 million and $500 million.
Let’s note that at the end of H1, 2018, the average value of private equity investments in Africa was $8 million and the total value of investments within the same period was $900 million, according to the African Venture Capital Association (AVCA).
