UNDP 2015 Human Development Index (Africa)

Monday, 28 December 2015 14:29

The UNDP 2015 Global Human Development Index shows that 3 out the 54 African nations fall under the “high humandevelopment” category. These are: Mauritius, Seychelles, and Algeria.

Under the Medium Development category, out of the 14 African countries listed, there are countries such as Tunisia (5th), Gabon (8), Morocco (11) and Congo (13). Among the least developed countries, the shock comes from Ivory Coast which falls at the 37th position despite its astounding economic boom.

The UNPD also measured the difference between the Gross National Income per Capita and the Human Development Index (HDI) for each country. This value which is negative for many of the African countries is proof of the disparities characterizing them. The lowest value for the difference between GNI per capita and HDI is -84 and goes to Equatorial Guinea. Gabon, Angola, Nigeria or Côte d’Ivoire still have much work to do to appropriately balance their riches.

Globally, Norway, Australia and Switzerland hold the first three places in the ranking which features 188 countries. USA, France, Russia, Brazil, China and India respectively rank 8th, 22nd, 50th, 75th, 90th, and 130th.
