The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development announced through its website that it has invested €2.3 billion in southern and eastern Mediterranean countries from September 2012 to November 2015.
This sum financed 82 projects in the sectors of road and railways, renewable energies, tourism, and support to small and medium enterprises.
Established in 1990 to facilitate transition to a market economy in Central and Eastern European countries, EBRD has decided to expand its intervention zone to southern and eastern Mediterranean countries after the 2011 Arab spring. The institution made its first investments in the region in 2012.
With new offices in Tunis, Amman, Cairo and Casablanca, the institution appointed Hildegard Gacek as its Managing Director in the region and head of offices for the four countries and opened permanent offices in Tunis, Amman and Cairo.
