ASX-listed diamond mining firm, Kimberley Diamonds started open-pit mining operations at its Lerala diamond mine in Botswana. The news was released as the firm projected first production and retrieval of first diamond for this month and sales in June.
It said construction for its processing plant is progressing well despite recent delays caused by rains. The infrastructure was to be completed mid-April and commissioned April-ending.
Moreover, the construction of the tailings dam extension started in March and progresses to accept tailings in April. Construction of dry tailings conveyor system also started in March.
Lerala was estimated to be exploited over 7 years, once in production. It will treat 1.4 million tons of ore a year and produce 357,000 carat a year in average.
The mince comprises five kimberlite pipes, covering about 6.66 hectares. Kimberley Diamonds owns 100% of the project.
