  • Framework reviewed at Lomé workshop with GIZ support

Organic farming stakeholders in Togo are developing a regulatory framework based on local standards to certify organic products, aiming to improve domestic producers’ access to certification.

The framework is currently under review at a workshop that opened on Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2026, in Lomé. The event is organized by the National Association of Organic Agriculture in Togo (ANABIO-Togo) in partnership with the German development agency GIZ.

Our work began in 2020, when we consulted stakeholders on how to define a framework for producing and marketing Togo-specific products within the Bio-PGS system,” said Dr. Combe K. Selom Anani, president of ANABIO-Togo. He said the framework was developed in collaboration with producers and agroecological farms.

The framework is also designed to support agroecology-focused actors. Once approved, it will give producers access to organic certification and promote the consumption of locally produced goods.

According to Dr. Essot’na Heyou Bodjona, director general of the Togolese Standardization Agency (ATN), the document sets out requirements covering organic production, including plant and animal production as well as governance.

The Lomé workshop follows earlier consultations held in Atakpamé, Kpalimé and Sokodé.
