The Ministry of Agriculture in Burkina Faso has distributed nearly 400,000 mango seedlings to farmers across the country between June and August 2025, according to a statement posted on the ministry’s Facebook page on Sunday, August 10.
The initiative is part of efforts to strengthen the mango industry, one of eight priority sectors under the Offensive Agropastorale et Halieutique 2023-2025, a national program designed to revive key agricultural value chains by increasing output and improving fruit quality.
The seedlings come from varieties selected for their high yields and adaptability to local conditions. Authorities say they will be used to replace aging orchards and establish new plantations. The goal is also to secure the country’s position in international markets while contributing to food security and economic growth.
Despite overall growth, mango production in Burkina Faso has fluctuated in recent years. According to a November 2024 report by the Burkina Export Promotion Agency (APEX-Burkina), output rose from 197,302 tons in 2018 to 271,503 tons in 2020, then fell by nearly 27% in 2021 to 199,240 tons. Production rebounded by 51% in 2022, reaching 300,000 tons.

This inconsistency has also affected export performance. APEX-Burkina data shows the sector generated an annual average of CFA17.18 billion ($30.5 million) in revenue between 2019 and 2023, with a record CFA22.1 billion ($39.3 million) in 2022. In 2022, the land area dedicated to mango cultivation in the country was estimated at 33,000 hectares.
