The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Burkina Faso (CCI-BF) on February 17 inaugurated a new poultry farm in Tolotama, in the commune of Bobo-Dioulasso. According to local media outlet Ouest Info, the CFA700 million ($1.2 million) project, name “Poulet et l’Œuf,” was developed by Pharmapath Burkina.
The two-hectare farm will focus on producing day-old chicks and quality hatching eggs for local breeders. Alidou Ouédraogo, coordinator of Pharmapath Burkina, said the company plans to produce 1 million hatching eggs in 2026 and double that volume in 2027.
“Our vision is to ensure that chicken consumption is not a luxury reserved for holidays or the wealthy, but that every Burkinabe can eat at least one piece of chicken per day,” he said.
A Policy Shift Favors Local Producers
The launch comes amid policy changes aimed at strengthening domestic poultry production. On October 3, 2025, the government suspended imports of broiler chicks. The measure is intended to boost local output, protect the poultry sector and reinforce food sovereignty.
The new environment creates room for private initiatives such as Pharmapath Burkina, as demand for poultry is expected to rise with population growth.
Data from the Trade Map platform show that Burkina Faso imported an average of $736,000 worth of chicks annually between 2020 and 2024, with imports peaking at $1.06 million in 2024. Morocco, Belgium, France and Turkey were among the country’s main suppliers that year.
Day-old chick production is critical to sustaining broiler farming for meat production. In 2023, Burkina Faso’s livestock population stood at nearly 71 million head, of which 49.5% were poultry, according to data compiled by the National Institute of Statistics and Demography (INSD).
