• Tekken unveils "Miary Zo," a Malagasy female fighter who practices Moraingy, a traditional martial art.
• She is the second African character in the franchise since its launch in 1994, after Egyptian Zafina in 2007.
• The game's growing relationship with Sub-Saharan Africa influenced her creation, following official visits and tournaments in Côte d'Ivoire and Madagascar.
On the night of August 3, Tekken fans worldwide reacted with excitement after Bandai Namco introduced “Miary Zo,” a new playable character from Madagascar. The game’s official social media platforms shared her reveal trailer, showcasing her unique fighting style and stage design.
Miary Zo becomes the second African character in Tekken history, following Egyptian fighter Zafina, introduced in 2007. Bandai Namco designed Miary Zo as a female martial artist who fights using Moraingy, a traditional Malagasy combat style. Her custom stage draws visual inspiration from Madagascar’s famous Alley of the Baobabs.
This addition marks a deeper connection between Tekken and Sub-Saharan Africa. In recent years, the official Tekken World Tour has hosted events in Côte d'Ivoire and Madagascar. These tournaments attracted wide local support and showcased the region’s passionate gaming communities.
Katsuhiro Harada, the longtime producer and face of Tekken, visited both countries in recent months. He repeatedly praised the warm welcome and enthusiasm he received from fans in Africa. Harada’s impressions of the region strongly influenced the inclusion of a Malagasy character.
The introduction of Miary Zo signals not just recognition of Madagascar, but also growing acknowledgment of Africa’s influence in global gaming culture. After this reveal, players are now openly hoping for a character based on Côte d'Ivoire.
