The partnership centers on advancing inclusive digital transformation. Abdirashid Ali Ainanshe, communications director at Hormuud Telecom, stated:“This partnership reflects Hormuud Telecom’s ongoing commitment to advancing an inclusive digital transformation in Somalia and throughout the region.”
He added: “By collaborating with GIZ and other stakeholders, we aim to contribute to forward-looking initiatives that expand opportunities for our communities, strengthen regional integration, and position Somalia within a rapidly evolving digital economy.”
The collaboration prioritizes cross-border payments as a key lever to facilitate trade between East Africa and Europe. Somali businesses face constraints in accessing international financial systems.
The initiative aims to address these structural barriers by deploying tailored digital solutions. These tools could improve transaction efficiency and expand market access for local firms.
The partnership also includes programs to develop digital skills, particularly in advanced technologies. It supports innovative projects with strong growth potential.
Both partners aim to create an environment that enables the emergence of digital services aligned with international standards.
Hormuud Telecom already holds a strong position in the domestic market through its telecommunications and mobile payment services. The company now aims to expand its role by supporting the upgrade of Somalia’s digital economy. GIZ’s involvement should help structure these initiatives and increase their scale and impact.
