The Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA), in collaboration with the Ministries of Youth & Sports and Information, is set to host a two-day social media monetization training for local content creators on May 6–7, 2026, at the Bella Casa Hotel in Monrovia. The initiative is part of Liberia’s ongoing efforts to empower creators to generate direct income, improve content quality, and expand their presence in global digital markets, according to a LTA press release dated April 9.
The training will include comedians, storytellers, challenge creators, reaction video makers, and other content producers who prioritize audience engagement. Participants will receive hands-on sessions covering high-performing content techniques, monetization opportunities, social media ethics, and best practices. The LTA noted that the sessions will equip creators with practical tools for audience growth, platform compliance, and commercial partnerships, as outlined in the press release.
Meta, which owns platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Threads, currently allows monetization in eight African countries, including Ghana. The LTA said its Chairman, Clarence Massaquoi, met with certified Meta executives in Lagos earlier this year to lay the groundwork for Liberia’s training program. According to the LTA, eligibility for Meta monetization requires creators to be at least 18 years old, comply with community standards, have a minimum follower threshold, and maintain a supported banking infrastructure for direct payments.
TikTok, the Chinese-owned social media platform with global reach among Gen-Z, requires countries to have data protection laws, payment infrastructure, tax frameworks, and local advertising investment to enable monetization. Currently, no African country meets all these requirements, but the LTA has been actively advocating for Liberia’s inclusion. During the 3rd Safer Internet Summit 2026 in Nairobi, Kenya, LTA Commissioners Patrick Honnah and Ben Fofana met with TikTok executives to discuss enabling monetization for Liberian creators. The press release notes that this engagement also emphasized digital inclusion, responsible online engagement, and the role of artificial intelligence in shaping modern content creation.
As part of the ongoing push, TikTok agreed to send a team of experts to Liberia to conduct specialized training sessions. The sessions will focus on best practices for producing high-quality content, understanding platform guidelines, building audience engagement, and attracting commercial partnerships, according to the LTA’s press release.
The LTA also highlighted the economic importance of social media monetization. “Social media monetization acts as a catalyst for digital entrepreneurship, allowing individuals to circumvent traditional barriers to the formal economy and generate direct, tangible income,” said Morris Baryogar, LTA Content Developer, in the press release. The program is expected to stimulate Liberia’s digital content ecosystem, strengthen creators’ capacity, and open new revenue streams, particularly for young entrepreneurs.
By facilitating this program, the LTA aims to position Liberia as a hub for digital content creation, enhance the professional capacity of local creators, and increase the country’s presence in the global social media economy, as highlighted in its April 2026 press release.
