MTN Group plans to expand its partnership with Huawei to accelerate the modernization of its telecommunications network. The South African operator and the Chinese equipment maker formalized a new phase of their collaboration on Wednesday, March 11, focusing on next-generation networks and intelligent infrastructure.

The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding at the 2026 Mobile World Congress (MWC), held last week in Barcelona. The agreement covers AI-driven network operations, fixed wireless broadband expansion, digital infrastructure development, data monetization and environmental, social and governance (ESG) initiatives.

A central element of the partnership is the transition to Level 4 Autonomous Networks (AN L4). By deploying agentic networks supported by AI copilots and intelligent agents, MTN and Huawei aim to shift network management from human-driven operations to autonomous systems capable of closed-loop optimization across planning, deployment and operations, MTN said.

AI as a strategic priority

The agreement comes as telecom operators increasingly invest in technology integration to improve network performance. Artificial intelligence has become a key priority for MTN, alongside other African operators such as Econet Wireless and Orange.

MTN cited several use cases already being deployed: AI-enabled fuel savings at data centers in South Africa, dynamic energy management at cellular sites in Benin, automated fiber-cut detection in Côte d’Ivoire, and traffic balancing and optimization in Nigeria.

Beyond AI, MTN is strengthening its network to meet rising demand for broadband connectivity and digital services across Africa. By expanding its fixed home broadband network, the company aims to capture growth driven by remote work, e-learning, streaming, gaming and connected home services.

MTN Group had 301.3 million subscribers at the end of September 2025, making it Africa’s largest telecom operator by subscriber numbers. The group also reported 165.8 million internet users and 64.4 million mobile financial services customers.

In the first nine months of 2025, MTN generated service revenue of 160.37 billion rand ($9.68 billion), up 25.9% year on year.
