Liberia Turns to Ethiopia to Fast-Track Digital Transformation
Wednesday, 15 April 2026 13:12
  • Liberia and Ethiopia sign agreements on AI, science and technology cooperation.
  • The partnership focuses on knowledge transfer and joint projects across institutions and universities.
  • Liberia aims to close infrastructure and capacity gaps while building a structured digital ecosystem.

Liberia is seeking to accelerate its digital transformation by leveraging advances made by Ethiopia, as African countries increasingly collaborate to strengthen their technology ecosystems.

The two countries signed memorandums of understanding on April 14 covering artificial intelligence, science and technology. The agreements establish a framework for concrete cooperation between the two nations.

The partnership provides for technical expertise exchanges and the development of joint projects involving institutions, universities and technology stakeholders. It aims to enable Liberia to benefit from skills transfer while adapting proven solutions to local conditions.

“We are working toward a better Liberia. To achieve this, we will draw inspiration from Ethiopia’s best practices in artificial intelligence,” said Sara Beysolow Nyanti.

Intra-African cooperation gains momentum

This initiative reflects a broader trend of intra-African cooperation, as countries seek to pool expertise and accelerate technological development. Governments are increasingly favoring collaboration within the continent rather than relying solely on external partners, while they promote models tailored to local realities.

Moreover, several African countries are adopting similar approaches. In March, Zambia moved closer to Kenya to draw on its digital transformation experience. In parallel, Gabon signed two agreements with Morocco during the 2026 edition of GITEX Africa, focusing on digital development, training and artificial intelligence.

For Liberia, the priority remains to address gaps in infrastructure and digital capabilities while building a more structured ecosystem. The focus on emerging technologies reflects the government’s ambition to position the country in high-potential segments.
