The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the mobile industry association GSMA launched a training programme on artificial intelligence (AI) governance in Egypt last week. The initiative is designed for government officials and regulators and aims to strengthen institutional capacity amid the rapid growth of AI technologies.
The two-day training brings together senior officials, representatives of national institutions, and participants from Libya, Sudan, Tanzania, and Jordan. This regional participation reflects growing South-South cooperation on regulating emerging technologies.
“As artificial intelligence becomes part of everyday government work, it is important that it is guided by clear rules and shared values,” said Chitose Noguchi, UNDP resident representative in Egypt. Noguchi added that the training helps public institutions work together, build practical expertise, and ensure that AI is used in a transparent and inclusive manner for the public.
The initiative follows a 2025 programme conducted in partnership with the Applied Innovation Center. It forms part of the national digital transformation agenda and the memorandum of understanding signed between UNDP and GSMA to support digital capacity building.
The programme focuses on AI governance frameworks, comparisons of regulatory approaches, and international best practices. GSMA experts are presenting assessment tools such as the “Responsible AI Maturity Roadmap,” designed to help institutions assess their readiness and guide the responsible adoption of AI.
