Agreement aims to modernize infrastructure and reduce urban–rural gaps
Plans include new transmission equipment and wider high-speed Internet
Glo-1 submarine cable to serve as backbone for Imo’s digital strategy
Imo State has formalized an agreement with telecom operator Glo to accelerate the rollout of digital infrastructure across the state. Announced by local authorities, the initiative aims to modernize the telecommunications network, expand Internet access, and reduce connectivity gaps between urban and rural areas.
According to the Imo State government, the partnership includes the installation of new transmission equipment, upgrades to network capacity, and the expansion of high-speed coverage in several underserved communities. The goal is to raise Internet quality to the level required to support essential uses such as online education, digital public services, e-commerce, and small business activity.
“The Glo 1 submarine cable, which links Nigeria directly to Europe through Globacom’s privately owned fibre optic network, will form the backbone of the project. It provides high bandwidth, minimal latency, and secure connections, supporting the State’s digital transformation and improving public service delivery,” the operator said.
By partnering with Glo, Imo State aims to pursue a development strategy focused on innovation and digital integration in a country where demand for high-speed services continues to rise. Local officials say the agreement marks the start of a broader program to position the state as a hub for connectivity and digital services.
