• Airtel Madagascar launches VoLTE for HD calls on 4G network
• Service enables calls with uninterrupted internet use at no extra cost
• Move follows satellite rollout, aims to boost digital inclusion
Mobile operator Airtel Madagascar officially launched Voice over LTE (VoLTE) technology on Thursday, Sept. 25. The initiative, which promises enhanced call quality on the 4G network, is part of the company's push to solidify its offering in a market shared with rivals Orange and Yas (Telma).
In a statement, the Malagasy subsidiary of Airtel Africa explained that VoLTE delivers high-definition (HD) sound quality and allows users to make calls while continuing to browse the internet or use applications without interruption. The service is available at no extra charge, using customers' standard data plans.
"We continue to invest in extending 4G coverage to consolidate our network and support the modernization of the sector," said Anne Catherine Tchokonté, CEO of Airtel Madagascar. "In parallel, we are preparing to launch 'Smart Feature Phones,' affordable smartphones that will connect more Malagasy and accelerate digital inclusion."
The VoLTE launch follows the company's introduction of a satellite connectivity solution in March 2024, aimed at improving both the quality and coverage of its internet network. At the time, Tchokonté said the solution offered "maximum service availability and a guarantee of uninterrupted connectivity," positioning Airtel Madagascar to deliver a highly resilient, high-speed, low-latency connectivity service to the market.
According to the GSMA, improving service quality is a major competitive advantage for telecom operators, helping to boost customer loyalty and attract new clients. This can translate into increased consumption and, ultimately, higher revenue.
While recent subscriber data for Airtel Madagascar is unavailable, its competitors Orange and Yas (Telma) reported 3.5 million and 10.2 million subscribers, respectively, as of the end of June 2025. DataReportal estimates the total number of mobile subscriptions in the country is 18.2 million.
