Over the past two years, the Tinubu administration has prioritized Nigeria’s natural gas potential to enhance energy security and support economic growth. As of June 1, 12 million Nigerian households now have access to Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), according to Olu Verheijen, Energy Adviser to President Bola Tinubu. She made the announcement during the celebration of the second anniversary of the administration.
“Our decade of gas is accelerating progress with 12 million homes now having LPG access, while infrastructure projects like OB3, AKK Pipeline, and the looping of ALPS are unlocking gas for power and industry,” said the adviser. She added, “This aligns fully with our energy transition plan.”
The increase in domestic LPG usage is supported by public incentives and ongoing infrastructure development. The government aims to reduce reliance on wood and diesel, improve public health, and foster the growth of the local gas sector.
This achievement is part of a broader effort to raise national gas production to 10 billion cubic feet per day by 2030. According to Verheijen, reaching this goal depends on tax reforms, modernization of regulatory frameworks, and increased investment in infrastructure through the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund (MDGIF).
Authorities aim to stimulate local consumption and increase current production levels, which are around 7 billion cubic feet per day. The objective is to make gas a central driver of the economy and industrial development.
