Egypt announced on November 9 the discovery of natural gas at the Badr-15 well in the Western Desert. Operated by Badr El-Din Petroleum Company (BAPETCO), a joint venture between the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC) and multinational energy company Shell, the well produces 16 million cubic feet of gas and 750 barrels of condensates per day. It holds recoverable resources estimated at 15 billion cubic feet (BCF) of gas, according to data reported by Xinhua.
The development comes as Egypt seeks to offset the natural decline of its long-standing gas fields. On October 22, 2025, Petroleum Minister Karim Badawi announced that 18 oil and gas discoveries had been made between July and October 2025, 13 of which are already connected to the production network. These wells currently supply about 44 million cubic feet of gas and 14,000 barrels of oil and condensates per day.
While the Badr-15 discovery does not fundamentally alter Egypt’s overall gas production outlook, it reflects the country’s strategy to offset declining output from mature fields by bringing new wells online quickly.
Minister Badawi also confirmed a program to drill 480 new wells by 2030, a plan announced at the World Energies Summit held in October 2025. This roadmap focuses on expanding seismic surveys, opening new exploration blocks, and accelerating drilling in existing production basins.
This momentum was further demonstrated by the launch of a new international bidding round for oil and gas exploration in the Red Sea, unveiled during the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (ADIPEC 2025).
