Norwegian solar developer Empower New Energy is expanding its industrial and commercial solar model across North Africa, betting on growing corporate demand for clean and affordable electricity.
The company signed a partnership in Tunisia on October 10 with AR Solaire, a semiconductor manufacturer for renewable energy systems, and Leoni Tunisia, a subsidiary of German cable supplier Leoni Group. The agreement will allow Leoni to generate part of its power locally through 10 rooftop and ground-mounted solar sites across the country.
According to Leoni’s statement, the project will cut its energy costs by 40%, equivalent to over $9 million in savings.
The collaboration reflects Empower’s strategy to finance, engineer, and operate solar systems for industrial and commercial clients, enabling them to lower both operating costs and carbon emissions. Empower’s model emphasizes local partnerships and blended financing to accelerate solar adoption in Africa’s corporate sector.
Earlier this year, Empower launched its first Tunisian project with Mall of Sousse, installing a 948 kWp rooftop solar system developed by Indigo Renewables Energy Solutions. The project will generate 1,400 MWh of electricity annually and prevent the emission of over 1,000 tons of CO₂ each year.
In Egypt, Empower signed a $50 million agreement with Engazaat to finance a 40 MW portfolio of solar projects. The company also invested in Morocco, developing 5.8 MW of capacity for Saray Immo Group.
Beyond North Africa, Empower is active in Nigeria and Kenya, positioning itself as a leading player in Africa’s industrial and commercial solar market.
These initiatives align with a continent-wide trend where African companies seek energy security and reduced carbon footprints amid rising electricity costs and grid instability.
Empower’s integrated approach—combining financing, engineering, and operations—positions it strategically to support Africa’s shift toward decentralized, renewable energy systems.
