Anthem announced on February 19 that it has energized the Gamma B Main Transmission Substation (MTS), a key infrastructure project designed to connect its Northern Cluster wind developments to South Africa’s national grid.
Built over 20 months on behalf of the National Transmission Company South Africa (NTCSA), a subsidiary of Eskom, the substation includes 400 kV and 132 kV infrastructure, a 500 MVA transformer and capacity for future connections. Located on the border between the Northern Cape and Western Cape provinces, between Victoria West and Murraysburg, the facility will evacuate electricity generated by the Umsinde, Khangela and Ishwati Emoyeni wind farms.
The three projects, currently under construction, represent 420 megawatts of contracted capacity. Power purchase agreements have been signed with industrial clients including Sibanye-Stillwater, Richards Bay Minerals and NOA Group Trading. Full commissioning of the wind farms is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026. According to Anthem, the electricity will be fed into the national grid and delivered to clients through a wheeling mechanism.
In a statement, the company said the energization of Gamma B MTS marks the completion of the delivery phase for the critical national infrastructure. The next step will involve final construction works and the grid connection of the wind farms.
Officially launched in September 2025, Anthem manages a secured portfolio of more than 2.7 gigawatts in South Africa, combining renewable generation, operational services and industrial power contracts. The development comes as South Africa seeks to increase the share of clean energy in an electricity mix still largely dominated by coal.
