Egypt adds 572,000 homes to gas grid despite supply shortfalls

Egypt connected 572,000 additional households to the national gas distribution network during FY2024/25, according to data from the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources published in local media. This brings the total number of households with access to natural gas to 15.5 million.

Over the same period, 47,500 vehicles were converted to run on compressed natural gas (CNG). The government also opened 34 fueling stations and 17 conversion centers across several governorates. The strategy aims to cut reliance on more expensive and polluting liquid fuels, easing energy costs for households and transport operators, even as national output contracts.

To cover the shortfall, Egypt has increased imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG), a move that weighs on state finances and complicates payments to foreign companies, slowing the investments needed to revive production.

Last month, the government unveiled a recovery plan to lift output to about 6.6 billion cubic feet per day by 2027, up from 4.1 billion currently.

Exploration activity has also picked up in recent weeks. In mid-September, Egypt signed a memorandum of understanding with BP, shortly after concluding four exploration deals with Shell, Eni, Arcius Energy, and Zarubezhneft.
