Bboxx chosen for World Bank’s $300M DARES solar electrification initiative
Program aims to bring off-grid power to 2.7M households and businesses
Nearly 90 million Nigerians still lack reliable electricity access
Bboxx has been selected to take part in a new $300 million solar program funded by the World Bank to improve energy access across Nigeria. The company announced its selection on May 14, 2025, as a participant in the Stand-Alone Solar Systems (SAS) window of the DARES program, which is being led by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA).
The DARES program, short for Durable, Accelerated, and Resilient Solutions, is designed to speed up the rollout of off-grid solar solutions in underserved parts of the country. With nearly 90 million Nigerians still lacking access to reliable electricity, this is the largest performance-based solar grant ever launched in Nigeria.
The SAS window includes $100 million for solar home systems, $150 million for solar business systems targeted at SMEs and commercial hubs, and $50 million for productive-use equipment. The program aims to serve 2.7 million households and micro-businesses.
With this funding, Bboxx will expand the delivery of its Pay-As-You-Go solar kits and other clean energy tools to communities without electricity. These tools include both home systems and devices meant for business or agricultural use.
Bboxx previously took part in the $60 million Nigeria Electrification Project (NEP). Its inclusion in this new program reflects a broader push to support private-sector involvement in decentralized energy access, especially for rural and off-grid populations.
