  • Project aims to handle rising traffic, boost travel sectors

Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama on Monday, April 27, 2026 launched a new phase of the Accra airport expansion project, focused on building a connector hall between Terminals 2 and 3.

The facility will feature jet bridges, redesigned waiting areas, VIP lounges, retail outlets and upgraded support infrastructure. It aims to improve passenger flow between terminals and overall airport operations.

The phase is part of a broader expansion programme that includes converting Terminal 2 into a dual-use terminal for domestic and international flights, building a new parking structure, constructing a control tower and hotel complex, and developing duty-free shops.

The project is intended to improve the passenger experience while easing congestion linked to rising traffic. Passenger numbers increased from 1.8 million in 2022 to 2.5 million in 2025, driven by expanded airline services, including Delta Air Lines, which resumed flights to Ghana in December 2025, and Air Tanzania, which began operations to Accra in January.

The trend is also supported by a government visa exemption policy aimed at strengthening the country’s appeal and supporting sectors tied to air transport, including tourism, hospitality and trade.
