Ghana Begins Dualization of Takoradi-Cape Coast Highway

Ghanaian President John Mahama on Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2025, launched work to upgrade the 73.6-kilometer Takoradi-Cape Coast highway into a dual carriageway. The project aims to ease congestion on one of the country’s busiest commercial routes.

The section is among 32 major road projects listed in the government’s 2025 mid-year budget review. It is part of the government’s “Big Push” development plan, which seeks to mobilize nearly $10 billion in investment, backed by the African Development Bank (AfDB), to strengthen national infrastructure.

The road component of the plan involves major investment in the construction and rehabilitation of primary, regional, and rural roads, along with the development of key cross-border corridors. The program also prioritizes better connectivity for remote areas.

According to the government, over 90% of passenger and freight traffic in Ghana currently moves by road. This dependence causes severe congestion and rapid deterioration of existing routes.

The Takoradi-Cape Coast highway is a vital corridor linking the Port of Takoradi, the country’s second-largest, and serving as a major route for cross-border trade with Côte d’Ivoire. This strategic logistics role explains its consistently heavy traffic.
