Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi launched 65 university research scholarships on Tuesday, November 4, during an official visit to Marrakech and Ifrane, Morocco. The scholarships were initiated through the Jawaher Fund for the Advancement of Women’s Education in partnership with local universities.
The United Arab Emirates-backed program aims to bolster women’s access to higher education and scientific research by offering mentorship, workshops, and access to university laboratories, while also stimulating innovation and academic projects led by women.
Local media outlets reported that the scholarships are divided into two parts: 45 awards for master’s and doctoral students at Cadi Ayyad University and 20 for students and researchers at Al Akhawayn University. The funding prioritizes disciplines strategic for national development, including science, technology, health, social sciences, and finance. The initiative underscores a commitment to linking academic training, innovation, and sustainable social impact.
"Building nations begins by developing minds and providing the necessary tools for research, knowledge, and work," Sheikha Jawaher stated. The prominent advocate for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) added, "Every school, university, laboratory, or innovative idea represents a foundation for a future focused on progress and stability."
The initiative addresses the underrepresentation of women in scientific research. Women accounted for 54% of the total number of Moroccan university students in 2022, according to the World Bank, but remain minority participants in research roles.
