Burkina Faso upgrades Gaoua University Center to full university status
Enrollment rose to 1,166 students, faculty expanded to 37 members
Move supports national education reforms amid rising higher-education demand
Burkina Faso has approved a decree upgrading the Gaoua University Center (CUG) to a full university, the government said after a Council of Ministers meeting on Thursday, Feb. 5. The institution has been renamed SIB Sié Faustin University.
The upgrade follows eight years of sustained growth at the CUG, which was created to meet rising demand for higher education in a region undergoing rapid demographic change.
Student numbers increased from 165 in 2017 to 1,166 in 2025, while the number of permanent faculty rose from two to 37 over the same period. Official projections show the university could admit nearly 2,100 new high school graduates each year and recruit around 44 additional permanent lecturers by 2028. Authorities say these trends demonstrate that the institution now has the academic capacity to operate as a full university.
Part of broader education reform
The move forms part of a wider overhaul of Burkina Faso’s education system under the Presidential Initiative for Quality Education for All (IPEQ), which aims to expand access to higher education and strengthen institutional governance.
Despite these reforms, capacity constraints remain a major challenge. The World Bank estimates that the number of students enrolled in higher education will exceed 280,600 by 2030, while enrollment rates remain low relative to population growth and infrastructure remains limited. Joseph Ki-Zerbo University, the country’s largest, admitted nearly 15,000 new high school graduates for the 2025-2026 academic year, underscoring both the system’s intake limits and the growing strain on the sector.
