Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has launched a project to build 2,000 housing units for the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ghana News Agency reported on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2026.
The project marks the first phase of a 10,000-unit housing plan. It will be carried out through a partnership between the Defence Industrial Holding Company and construction firm FT Global over five years. The cost was not disclosed.
The launch follows Mahama’s early January announcement of a memorandum of understanding reached in Singapore. The agreement aims to provide prefabricated housing for security personnel, including the police, the Ghana National Fire Service and the Armed Forces.
“This project, together with the Barracks Regeneration Programme, reflects our commitment to improving living conditions for service personnel and their families,” the head of state said.
Ghana’s housing deficit is estimated at 1.8 million units, according to 2024 figures from Works and Housing Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah. Housing remains unaffordable for most Ghanaians, while rising construction material prices remain a major challenge.
The government launched a revised national affordable housing programme in August 2023, dubbed “My Home My Peace,” which aims to cut construction costs by up to 40%.
In September 2024, construction was underway on 609 housing units for civil servants under the District Housing Programme for public sector workers.
