Air Tanzania has officially launched a direct air route between Dar es Salaam and Accra, Ghana, with flights operating three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Tanzanian authorities said the new service is expected to open up economic opportunities and support tourism growth in the East African country, which is also set to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
The new route is expected to improve connectivity with West Africa by reducing travel times and avoiding long detours via overseas hubs used by some carriers. According to data from booking platform Kayak, Turkish Airlines currently serves the route in more than 17 hours, with a stopover in Istanbul.
The Accra service follows the launch of Air Tanzania’s route to Lagos and aligns with the airline’s expansion strategy. The carrier plans to add new destinations, including Muscat in Oman and London in the United Kingdom, in the coming months. The network expansion reflects a broader national strategy to position the flag carrier as a key driver of air traffic, tourism, and transport activity.
Tanzania is targeting 8 million tourists a year by 2030, up from about 5.3 million recorded between 2024 and 2025. Ghana is also seeking to attract more visitors after introducing visa-free entry for all African nationals in December 2024.
